BOM 2025 - UFO Under the Needle from Grandma's Red Needle

UFO #27 is currently under the needle. (2026 UFO list)

It became a flimsy and was thread basted in August.

While I thread baste big quilts, I try to come up with a quilting design. I didn't come up with anything for this one! lol

Eventually I did a search and ended up with this design, straight lines. Since the center of each block is different, I have yet to come up with a design, they all (12 blocks) have to be quilted differently.

Not much sewing has happened the last week. I decided to paint the walls in ...

Rainy and Windy Weekend Sewing from Grandma's Red Needle

How was your weekend? I hope you had a good one.

Here, it was 'quilting weather'; intermittent rain, strong wind and cold. With high humidity, it feels colder than it is. BRRR! While writing this (Monday morning) it's pouring rain.

Two quilts (UFOs) were thread basted;

Pat Sloan's 182 Day Solstice

It measures approximately 87 inches / 220 cm square. It's a monster to quilt on my domestic sewing machine, but it will be done, eventually. My goal is to finish it by end of September (this year!). I forgot taking a ...

A Quilting Life's BOM 2025 is a FLIMSY from Grandma's Red Needle

UFO #27 (UFO list) is finally a Flimsy!

A Quilting Life's BOM 2025

The quilt consists of 12 blocks. I did 10 of the blocks in RSC colors (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) last year. Somehow I dragged on the last two - see my previous post.

I couldn't decide on what color to choose for the house block. For the Dresden Plates block; I was not veeery eager to do it since I had never done any before. As I can recall, I think an alternative block was suggested. I 'survived' doing the Dresden Plates block! LOL

It always takes ...

Jolly Tree Farm QAL / A Quilting Life BOM 2025/2026 from Grandma's Red Needle

Hello everyone!

First of all: THANK YOU to those of you who have commented on my previous posts! I'm sorry I've not been able getting back to you.

I'm online again! After two weeks off due to the PSU on my desktop PC failed. Long story short; DH managed to fix it (install a new PSU), by communicating with our DF and data-guru in SA! Thank you so much, A! I hate using my mobile phone for 'computer work', it is way too small and I tend to lose patience (very fast!)!

Sewing, cross-stitching as well as ...

RSC April 2026 - PINK / Dear Nina is back! from Grandma's Red Needle

It has been some busy days since my previous post.

It has been yard work and decluttering. I've gone through lots of papers, tossed or shredded most. I couldn't believe how many quilt patterns I've collected; 2 big ring binders! I've kept one stitchery pattern! It has 12 cute snowmen motifs, how could I toss it?! It would make a fun winter / Christmas quilt.

Last week was 'sewing week'.

Yes! Dear Nina (Bernina 440 QE) is back from the spa in South Africa! She had a total breakdown and the dealer here nor Bernina Switzerland, did ...

Coffee With Dad - An RSC Flimsy, Another WIP from Grandma's Red Needle

As the title says; Coffee with Dad is a Flimsy!

Viola at Familie Barwitzki challenged me to work on my UFO #26, since 26 is her birthday. Now that Swirling Stars is on hold, waiting (forever! due to shipping error from the online shop!) for ordered quilting thread, I accepted the challenge.

In my previous post I mentioned I had too many blocks for one quilt.

That is absolutely not true! I don't know where my head was, or better say brain (it must have melted in the heat these days!), when I figured out I need 36 coffee ...

RSC 2026 Week 4 - January is BLUE from Grandma's Red Needle

A new year is here, and so is RSC - Rainbow Scrap Challenge - hosted by Angela at SuperScrappy

I have yet to decide how much I'll participate in the RSC this year. Definitely not as much as the previous years.

I'm drowning in RSC blocks from the last 3 years and my goal is to make those into flimsies (some are done already, it has been some busy weeks sewing). It's even better if they can be finished, at least some of them!

Last year, I did part of Sherri McConnell's BOM 2025 in RSC colors. I ...

Catching Up on RSC July / August / September continues from Grandma's Red Needle

It has been a lot of catch up on RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) over the last couple of weeks. I have made a lot of blocks and I'm happy to say I'm all caught up (almost*!) on RSC 2025! Sewing table is cleared for squares and fabrics (for RSC), ready for something new (coming soon).

*There will be two more blocks from Sherry McConnell's BOM, that's it for this year.

For not to make it too photo-heavy, I'll make it into two posts.

What took the most time, was four blocks for Pat Sloan's ...

Catch-Up on RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) July / August / September 2025 from Grandma's Red Needle

Hello everyone! I'm back!

I can't believe I haven't done a blog post since beginning of august! If you read that post, you know my 'Dear Nina' (Bernina 440 QE) was sick and had to go to a spa in South Africa. She has reached the spa and waiting for either good or bad news about what can be done.

Good news is, I purchased a new Bernina; 770 QE PLUS! Her name is 'Helena'. I got her in August and I very happy! It has a lot of features I most probably never will use. I ...

RSC Week #23 Orange for June / Last of Green for May / Not Getting Rid of the Squirrel from Grandma's Red Needle

How come it's June already?! Before we know it's Fall and Christmas again!

Been busy quilting, I know I have missed a lot in blog-land. Hope you all are doing well and enjoying summer, or 'winter' on the Southern hemisphere.

Over the last days, I'm caught up on RSC (Rainbow Scrap Challenge) for May, which was Green. Orange is chosen for June and all blocks done! I have mentioned earlier I prefer to do the RSC blocks beginning of the month. By doing it that way, I can work on anything I fancy the rest of the ...
